The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics could include motorsport as a discipline

It has been a dream for the International Automobile Federation for years and, especially, Jean Todt, worked so that it could finally be carried out. However, it is now, when he has just finished his term at the head of the FIA, that the race seems to have accelerated so that motor sport can become Olympicspecifically ahead of the Olympic Games to be held in the US city of The Angels for the year 2028.

As has been known, the organization of LA28 has invited different sports federations to make their presentations before their possible integration into the program. Among some of the names we find the International Cricket Council (ICC), breakdance (World DanceSport Federation). Baseball/softball (WBSC), flag football (IFAF), lacrosse (World Lacrosse), karate (WKF), kickboxing (WAKO), squash (WSF) and finally motorsports (FIA).

Obviously karate, which recently fell out of its options to be part of the event every four years to let in other disciplines, among which was the break dancing the thriving squash, cricket that brings together large masses in the countries where it is popular or motorsport itself may be the great favorites. These nine disciplines must present their arguments and project to be part of the 2028 Olympic Games at the end of the month, in a decision that it is expected to take over the IOC as early as 2023during the meeting to be held in Mumbai around mid year.

The options of all these sports are limited, especially if we take into account that 28 disciplines are already announced (water sports, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, canoeing, cycling, horse riding, fencing, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, rowing, rugby, sailing, shooting, skateboarding, soccer, sport climbing, surfing , taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, triathlon, volleyball and wrestling) for this edition of the competition, however, taking into account the effort, history and importance of some of them, perhaps some inclusion could be made among the candidates for the fight for the medals.

Surely for the FIA it would have been key to have been represented before, at the next Olympic Games in Paris in 2024especially considering the presence of Todt at the head of the Federation, however, it did not arrive on time, surely also influenced by the adjustments made in the midst of the pandemic and the new tempos marked by the delay of the edition in Tokyo.

For the FIA it may not be too big a headache to present your candidacy, surely something restricted being Los Angeles and having to find a suitable setting, but it has already demonstrated its organizational capacity when, at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires, they created their own e-karting competition with a mixed format (women-men). In addition, this year Paul Ricard will host the second edition of the FIA Motorsport Games, this time with an expanded program that brings new competitions (including rallies) after they could not be carried out in 2020 and 2021.

In case of being finally Olympic the Motorsport, It seems that it can stick closely to one type of race format such as karts instead of opening up to touring cars, GT’s, single-seaters or rallies as in the case of the competition organized by the FIA since 2019.
