On August 27, the 47th edition of the Junior Track Cycling World Championships ended at the Sylvan Adams National Velodrome in Tel Aviv. It is the first time that the championships are held in Israel.
In the event about 300 participated cyclists under 18 years old from 40 countries of the five continents. Germany was the country that obtained the most medals, with four golds, three silvers and five bronzes in various events.
The opening ceremony at the Velodrome was attended by the president of the Israel Olympic Committee, Yael Arad, the philanthropist Sylvan Adams, the president of the Israeli Cycling Union, Dafna Ling, the mayor of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Ron Huldai, and the deputy Simon Davidson.
Adams and the Israeli Cycling Federation aim to transform track cyclingin which 36 medals are awarded during the Olympic Games, in a major sport in Israel.
The Israeli team at the championships was led by Uri Besh-Duvinsky (who won a medal last month at the European Junior Championships) and Oron Argoc, Israeli junior champion from the Haifa Masters team. Other participants included Noa Schweki, Hilli Biderman, Uri Bahri and Ron Ben-Efraim.
The event was produced by the Comtec Group, which together with Adams has brought to Israel major sporting and entertainment eventssuch as the French Super Cup, the Giro D’Italia, the EuroBasket, the Judo Grand Slam and the Tiberias Ironman contest.
