What is TGL, the new format of golf, designed as a show, by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and the PGA Tour?

After announcing their joint venture earlier this week, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have revealed details of their new golf league in which teams of three PGA Tour stars compete in specially designed arenas. .

This Wednesday, the new company of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, TMRW Sports (Tomorrow Sports)announced the launch of a brand new golf league that gives pride of place to new technologies. TGL (Tech-infused Golf League) also benefits from the endorsement of the PGA Tour through a partnership.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are therefore the first two players to embark on the adventure, but others should follow.

What is it exactly?

Here it is not a question of classic tournaments to which we have been accustomed for decades but rather of entertainment around golf.

15 times on a Monday, 6 teams of 3 players will face each other for 2 hours by taking up different challenges: Simulator matches, approach competitions, etc.

TGL plans to welcome many spectators in order to offer an experience like no other. These “shows” of which the Americans have the secret will obviously be televised from January 2024.

The points scored during the season should enable the best teams to qualify for the semi-finals and then the final.

For fans, you have to imagine sitting on the edge of the field like in an NBA game. It’s that kind of environment, music, player introductions. You are at the heart of the action as a supporter. You see everything unfold in front of you.

Mike McCarley, Founder and CEO of TMRW Sports

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy insisted on the place of new technologies in this new league which aims to align itself with other stadium sports, while attracting a new generation of fans.

“TGL is the next evolution in professional golf, and I am committed to helping usher it into a new era,” Woods said.

“As a huge sports fan myself, I’m thrilled to combine golf and technology and the concept of team like in other sports. We all know what it’s like to be in a football stadium or a basketball arena where you can follow all the action at all times, since everything is happening right in front of you.

Mike McCarley, founder and CEO of TMRW Sports, was present at a press conference on Wednesday. Obviously he was asked about the way the PGA Tour had received the project.

“It’s a technology-infused team competition, live in front of an audience and in front of TV cameras. It’s 18 holes concentrated in two hours. We’ve been working on this together for almost two years, and every time we talked about it, for us it was always with the idea of making it a complementary product to the PGA TOUR.

Dubbed by the great American circuit and its boss Jay Monahan, the TGL should not see the light of day until January 2024. But McCarley tried to give a taste by broadcasting a video.

“For the fans, you have to imagine sitting on the edge of the court like in an NBA game. It is this type of environment, music, presentations of players, that they will find. You are at the heart of the action as a fan. The shots will be simulated on a large screen close to the size of an IMAX but the players hit the ball on the stage placed in the heart of the stadium.

We can not wait to see it. Long live 2024!
