PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: Pete Rose, who was in Philadelphia on Sunday August 7 to celebrate the 1980 world champions, ignored a question about his alleged relationship with a minor decades ago. “No, I’m not here to talk about it. I am sorry for that. It’s been 55 years, baby, ”said Philadelphia Inquirer Phillies writer Alex Coffey.
ANNOUNCEMENT
Rose, 81, 17 times All-Star, was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling the sport from 1985 to 1987. He declined to comment further on the allegations against him. «I’ll tell you once again. I’m here for Philadelphia fans. I’m here for my teammates. I’m here for the Phillies organization, ”Rose said. “And who cares what happened 50 years ago. You weren’t even born. So you shouldn’t talk about it, because you weren’t born. If you don’t know a damn about it, don’t talk about it ”.

Coffey said a representative of Rose later approached her to apologize on her behalf. “Will you forgive me if I sign 1,000 baseballs for you? Rose joked at her, before saying “sorry”. The Phillies had stated in a previous statement that all Pete would not be attending the event. “In planning the 1980 meeting, we consulted with Pete’s teammates about including him,” the team said. Everyone wants Pete to participate in the celebrations as without him there would be no trophy in 1980. Also, the club has received permission from the commissioner’s office to invite Pete as a member of the league team.

Rose was made available after the ceremony. Someone, maybe an agent, said she had something to tell me, but she didn’t seem to know that she was expected to say anything. She asked if she offended me and said “you will forgive me if I sign 1000 baseballs for you” before saying “sorry” https://t.co/w5ikH1jKDR

What were the charges against Pete Rose?
A woman identified as Jane Doe previously claimed she had a sexual relationship with Rose in 1973, when she was only 14 or 15 years old. Rose was married at the time with two children. Rose’s attorney said the charges against him weren’t verified. Rose admitted in 2017 that she was having an affair with the woman, but claimed that she is of legal age for consent in Ohio, which she is 16. Going against the accuser’s account, she claimed that she had not had sexual encounters outside of Ohio.
ANNOUNCEMENT
Rose accepted a permanent ban on baseball betting several years ago. He retired after the 1986 season as the sport’s all-time leader with 4,256 hits and 3,562 games played.
In 1984, Rose took on the role of player / manager of the Reds and reportedly spent six seasons as manager of the Cincinnati Reds. During this time, he would start betting on the Reds regularly. In August 1989, Rose was given a permanent ban from baseball after she was accused of gambling in baseball games while she played for the Reds and while she ran the team. The allegations against him included claims that he had bet on his own team.
