Some teams have even been strengthened by two drivers who are former world champions. Here are five pairs of world champions strengthening the same team in MotoGP:

5. Casey Stoner dan Nicky Hayden (Ducati)

Ducati has paired two drivers who have become world champions, namely Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden. Stoner is the 2007 MotoGP champion and Nicky Hayden is the best rider in the 2006 MotoGP.

The two talented racers were a duet in 2009 and 2010. Unfortunately, when they were duets, there was no championship title that came to the Ducati garage.

Furthermore, there is Yamaha which unites Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. Both of these riders were paired by Yamaha in two periods, namely in 2008-2010 and 2013-2016.

However, the two drivers were only a duet with the status of former world champions in the second period. Because, Lorenzo just won the first and second MotoGP titles in 2010 and 2012. In total, he has won three MotoGP titles.

Lorenzo’s last MotoGP title was won in 2015 in a duet with Rossi. Uniquely, Rossi is Lorenzo’s rival in the race for the title that season. Lorenzo and Rossi were involved in hot competition, both in the first and second period at Yamaha.

2. Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo (Honda)

Honda has also united two drivers who have won the title, namely Marc Marquez and Lorenzo in 2019. At that time, Marquez had collected five MotoGP titles.

When in a duet with Lorenzo, Marquez was able to win his sixth MotoGP title in 2019. However, Lorenzo failed to shine.

Lorenzo missed a lot due to injury. In fact, at the end of the 2019 season, Lorenzo decided to retire from the world that made his name.

The first position is of course filled by Marquez and Joan Mir who are duets at Honda starting the 2023 season. Please note, Marquez is a six-time MotoGP champion. Meanwhile, Mir won the MotoGP title in 2020 when Marquez was out for a long time due to a broken right arm.

Since 2019, Honda has failed to win the title again. This season, Honda’s chances of winning the title were almost closed due to Pol Espargaro’s poor performance and the absence of Marquez. For your information, Marquez is undergoing a recovery after the fourth operation on his right arm.

Therefore, Honda did not extend Pol’s contract. As Marquez’s new partner, Honda recruited Mir who was experienced with Suzuki Ecstar. Honda’s success in recruiting Mir was also helped by the resignation of Suzuki at the end of the 2022 season. The duet of Marquez and Mir is interesting to see next season.
