The New York Yankees have nine games left in the 2022 Major League Baseball season. These games, like many others before them, could get big ratings due to a home run chase involving the team’s star player.
What’s happened: Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge hit 60 homers this season; As of Tuesday, September 27, 2022. The slugger leads the home run tally in American League and all of Major League Baseball.
>
On Judge’s next home run, should he hit another, he would call Roger Maris draw level and hold the American League record for a season. Hitting 62 home runs would be the American League record and may also be considered a Major League record by some, since the records of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds questioned because of their links to steroid use.
Attempting to make history and Judge’s home run chase have resulted in increased viewership at the Yankees’ games, which could benefit multiple media partners and the team’s own broadcast platform.

Yankees Media Winners: The biggest winner of Judge’s race for 61 home runs is likely YES Network, the home of the Yankees games. The media platform is 26% owned by Yankee Global Entertainment.
Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc (NASDAQ:SBGI), through its subsidiary Diamond Sports Group, acquired a 20% stake in YES Network in 2019. Sinclair also broadcasts local coverage of many MLB teams, including the Texas Rangers, who are playing the last four games against the Yankees.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) owns 20% of YES Network through a deal completed in 2019. Amazon is also a partner in the broadcast of 21 Yankees games in the 2022 season, including having Amazon exclusively broadcast the game on September 30th.
Tuesday’s (September 27) game is one of the games being broadcast on YES Network and MLB broadcast partner TBS, a unit of Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) TBS could benefit from the high ratings at various MLB games and also from the high ratings at the MLB playoffs.
Another company that could benefit from the high ratings of the Yankees games is Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL). The Yankees game on Friday September 23, 2022 was not shown on YES Network but on AppleTV+, a streaming platform from the tech giant.
The New York Attorney General arranged for the exclusive transmission Letitia James to criticize AppleTV+ and advocate opening the game to all New Yorkers and showing it on YES Network.
Apple broadcast the Yankees game for free to anyone with an Apple ID.
Apple has spent heavily on sports content in recent years, grabbing the rights to MLB’s Friday Night games and Major League Soccer games. Many are probably unaware that Apple offers MLB games, which the New York Attorney General’s judge and press may have contributed to.
Major League Baseball even tweeted that the game is available for free and provided a guide to watching the game with links to AppleTV+, which could potentially bring its partner new viewers and new subscribers.
