Iga Swiatek Wins US Open 2022 After Overthrowing Ons Jabeur

New York

Iga Swiatek won the women’s singles at the US Open 2022. This is the second grand slam title for the Polish player this year.

Facing Ons Jabeur who is the second seed, Swiatek who is the top seed won 6-2, 7-6 (5) in a duel held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sunday (11/9) early morning WIB.

Swiatek managed to dominate in the first set, but got tough resistance from Jabeur in the second set. After winning 4-0, Jabeur had equalized the score to 4-4. However, Swiatek took the lead again and managed to lock the win after Jabeur’s final blow came out.

Swiatek is the first woman since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win two Grand Slam titles in a year. Outside of Serena Williams, the competition in women’s tennis in recent years is indeed difficult to see any dominance.

But this title is Swiatek’s seventh overall in 2022. This confirms his current status as the best since Ashleigh Barty’s retirement earlier in the year.

“I didn’t expect much. Before this tournament, I went through difficult times,” said Swiatek regarding his victory at the 2022 US Open, quoted by the BBC. After winning the French Open in June, he did experience a decline in four tournaments in a row.

Swiatek was even eliminated in the round of 16 in two tournaments leading up to the US Open, namely the Canadian Open and the Cicinnati Masters. Therefore, this title is a relief in itself.

As for Ons Jabeur, he still has to wait for his first grand slam title longer. At the Wimbledon tournament last July, he also became the runner-up after being defeated by Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan).

“Winning and losing is part of tennis. I also need to fight to win my first WTA title. It takes time, and I believe winning a major title will also take time,” said Jabeur.

“Most importantly, I accept and learn from this defeat,” continued the Tunisian.
