Five gold medals for the Azzurri and first place in the medal table

Italy closes in first place the medal table for Nations in the Finals of the European Para-Archery Cup in Nottingham (Gbr). The Azzurri win 5 golds, 3 silvers and 1 bronze, first place for Enza Petrilli, Maria Andrea Virgilio, Asia Pellizzari and the curved mixed teams with Petrilli and Travisani and W1 with Pellizzari and Tonon

The two days dedicated to the Finals of the European Para-Archery Cup in Nottingham, Great Britain, which involved 8 Azzurri able to earn this last international appointment after the first stage of the circuit held in Nove Mesto (Cze ) and the second on the occasion of the European Championships in Rome.

Italy returns from Robin Hood’s homeland after winning nine medals. There are five gold medals in total thanks to the women’s performances to be framed: in the open recurvo Vincenza Petrilli wins, in the open compound Maria Andrea Virgilio in the final against Eleonora Sarti who takes the silver and, in W1, Asia Pellizzari. The triumphs also come among the mixed teams with the successes in the Olympic (Travisani, Petrilli) and in the W1 (Pellizzari, Tonon). Stefano Travisani in the recurvo and the mixed team compound (Bonacina, Virgilio), all silver, also go to medal, while in W1 Paolo Tonon wins the bronze overcoming Francesco Tomaselli in another Italian derby and, finally, Matteo Bonacina in the compound is 4 Place.
The ranking by nations therefore sees Italy first with 9 medals (5 golds, 3 silvers and 1 bronze) ahead of the hosts of Great Britain with 8 (3 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronzes) and France, third with a gold.

THE INDIVIDUAL FINALS
– Gold medal for Vincenza Petrilli who wins the very final of the 7-3 recurvo against the Polish Milena Olszewska who starts very badly and loses the first two sets 28-26 and 26-18, then tries to get up again in the following two partials (26-26 and 24-23), but the blue does not tremble, on the contrary he takes the match home with the excellent 29-22 of the last volley.
Stefano’s race ends with silver Travisani who fails to overtake the French Guillaume Toucoullet as he did in the final for the bronze at the Paralympic European Championships in Rome. The transalpine wins the first set 23-21, then is taken up by the blue (27-21), the third is interlocutory (28-28), but in the fourth and fifth comes the decisive acceleration (28-27 and 26- 21) for the final 7-3.
The final for the women’s compound gold is an all-blue matter with Maria Andrea Virgilio who gets the better of Eleonora Tailors 135-132. The match opens with 28-25 for the first and 29-27 for the second. Virgilio in the third round takes another point of advantage (26-25) and closes the accounts in the fifth (28-24) after the fourth had gone to Sarti 29-26.
Fourth place instead for Matteo Bonacina who loses the match against Slovakian Marcel Pavlik 138-137. The blue goes down by three points after the first two partial (27-25, 28-27), the third ends in a draw (28-28), then the Italian athlete returns to the game (29-27) but fails in the comeback because the last three arrows end 28-28.
Asia Pellizzari wins W1 gold thanks to 126-125 in the final against Czech athlete Tereza Brandtlova. The blue immediately goes under 25-22, but then raises his head and after the equal 28-28 he takes the lead with the 29-24 of the third set. The +2 allows Pellizzari to lead the match in port thanks to 23-23 of the fourth set and 24-25 of the fifth.
In the men, the all-blue final for the bronze goes to Paolo Tuna against Francis Tomaselli with the result of 129-118. The difference is made by the departure of Tonon who wins the first two sets 26-20 and 24-21, Tomaselli recovers two points in the third (27-25) but is unable to get closer because the other two volleys end in a draw 27- 27 and 25-25.

LE FINALI MIXED TEAM – The mixed team of the Olympic arc Petrilli-Travisani climbs on the first step of the podium beating Poland 5-1 (Olszewska, Ciszek). The blue duet wins the first and third sets 31-29 and 32-31 and draws the second 35-35.
Ends with silver for Italy’s Bonacina and Virgilio the compound final against Great Britain (Paterson, Harris) who wins in the play-off 149-149 (20-18). The match is beautiful and balanced with the first and third partial in a tie 36-36 and 39-39 and the other two ending one on each side 36-35 Great Britain the second and 39-38 for Italy the fourth. So we go to the shoot off with the opponents of the blues who touch perfection and close the last and decisive two arrows 20-18.
Italy dominates the W1 final with Pellizzari and Tonon beating Great Britain (Kingstone, Saych) 144-125. Domination is evident in the final result and also in the partial, all in favor of the blue couple: 36-29, 35-33, 36-35 and 37-28.
The international season of the Paralympic National team ends with this trip and, once again, the blue group has confirmed itself at the top of the world. After the three medals won at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, which recorded the tenth consecutive edition of the Games with at least one podium conquered, Italy did not stop winning other laurels in all the events of 2022, starting with the Dubai World Cup. passing through the Para-Archery Cup in Nove Mesto, the European Para-Archery in Rome and, lastly, in this very final of the circuit. The group continues to grow and will try to further raise the bar in view of Paris 2024.
