Novak Djokovic in deceptive security – will the superstar miss the ATP Finals?

Novak Djokovic has already won the ATP Finals five times, the big end-of-season event for the eight best players of the year. And this November, too, the 35-year-old is one of the favorites in the Pala Alpitour in Turin – if he’s there at all.

At first glance, the matter is clear: As a Wimbledon winner, Djokovic is one of the Grand Slam champions of this season. Even if he doesn’t finish in the top seven in the ATP Singles Race and thus misses direct qualification, he would still be qualified according to the current status.

The reason: Eighth starting place goes to a reigning Grand Slam tournament winner if he does not reach the top 7.

However, and this is where it gets exciting in the Djokovic case, only if the professional in question is in the top 20.

Djokovic only 15th in the singles race

The Serb is currently 15th in the ATP Singles Race. Just enough to slip into the field via the additional rule.

The low placement of the exceptional player is obvious: Djokovic could not take part in the Australian Open, the US Open or the Masters events in Miami, Indian Wells, Montreal and Cincinnati. In contrast to the world rankings, only results from the current calendar year are included in the rating for the singles race.

Top 5 – the most spectacular Djokovic moments in Paris

Djokovic played the last match to date on July 10th. It was the Wimbledon final he won against Nick Kyrgios.

Means: Djokovic has to collect points in the fall in order not to fall out of the top 20. Due to his refusal to be vaccinated against the corona virus, it is difficult to plan which tournaments he can actually play. If the number of infections increases, it cannot be ruled out that some countries will tighten entry regulations again.

Djokovic serves at the Laver Cup

Djokovic will also not be able to collect any race points at the next appearance.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion will compete in the Laver Cup in London from September 23-25, a non-tour team competition.

The plan is for Djokovic to serve at the ATP tournament in Tel Aviv the week after and then tackle the Masters in Shanghai and Paris.

It will be a hot autumn, not only for the 35-year-old – because with Rafael Nadal and the newly crowned US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz, only two professionals have qualified for the ATP Finals.
