19-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open by beating Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 in the final and becoming the youngest number one in the world.
Alcaraz is the youngest men’s Grand Slam champion since Rafael Nadal at the 2005 French Open and also the youngest New York champion since Pete Sampras in 1990.
The defeated Ruud was also in the running to become number one in the world rankings. It is for him the second final lost in a Grand Slam this year after being defeated by Nadal at the French Open.
