SAN DIEGO — Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., currently under suspension from Major League Baseball, underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the San Diego Padres announced.
The operation was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttache, the National Football League’s Dodgers and Rams physician.
The operation was originally supposed to take place last week but it was postponed because Tatis was suffering from a strep infection.
The healing period is estimated between four and six months. The start of his training camp could be delayed, but if all goes well Tatis should be fully recovered once he completes his 80-game suspension for testing positive for an illegal performance-enhancing drug.
Tatis missed the first four months of the 2022 season with a broken left wrist, an injury believed to have arisen from a motorcycle accident during the offseason.
He was about to return to action when MLB authorities suspended him Aug. 12 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. The suspension will keep him out for about a third of the 2023 season.
Tatis suffered multiple left shoulder dislocations last season and the Padres had hoped he would opt for surgery to fix the problem in the offseason.
Tatis opted out of having surgery and then broke his wrist, which wasn’t diagnosed until he reported to training camp. He had wrist surgery in mid-March.
