Milwaukee Brewers Colombian prospect Branly Jaraba hit a 2-run homer and a productive double with the bases loaded, Víctor Vargas got the win, José Altamiranda got the save, Dylan Clarke took the loss and Colombia overcame 8- to Australia at the “Taipei Tianmun Baseball Stadium” in Taipei City.
The Colombian third baseman hit a two-run homer and a bases-loaded double, Australia had the potential tying run in the bottom of the seventh, but Jose Altamiranda got the final out.
Branly Jaraba’s four RBIs were decisive in Colombia’s 8-6 victory over Australia in the game corresponding to the super round of the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup.
Branly Jaraba put Colombia ahead with a two-run homer in the second and hit a bases-loaded double in a four-run fifth at bat that would provide just enough of a lead to shield Colombia’s bullpen from an Australian comeback.
Branly Jaraba homered off Dylan Clarke as the game’s third hitter and designated hitter Bryan Buelvas added a two-run double in the top of the second.
Australia retaliated in the bottom of the second inning, hitting five singles off Victor Vargas, while right fielder Travis Bazzana and shortstop Jarryd Dale had productive hits.
Australia got another run on Jarryd Dale’s second hit in the bottom of the fourth.
Colombia took the final lead in the top of the fifth against right-hander Jayden Bastow, the third Australian pitcher, who allowed an opening double to shortstop Héctor Martínez.
He then walked Buelvas and allowed a hit by second baseman Carlos Arroyo, setting the stage for Branly Jaraba. Two runs were scored on Branly Jaraba’s double and a third came on a poor stint that allowed him to score the eighth run on a sacrifice fly.
Australia passed reliever Luis Arrieta in the bottom of the seventh. Catcher Alex Hall doubled and designated hitter Mitchell Edwards followed with an RBI single. Arrieta walked third baseman Clayton Campbell and center fielder Solomon Maguire swept the bases with a triple.
Colombia made a quick call to the bullpen for José Altamiranda. Left fielder Tyson Zamora, representing the potential tying run, worked the full count and then struck out on a curveball pitch to end the game.
