Without convincing FC Utrecht has qualified for the second round of the KNVB Cup. At neighbor and third divisionist Sportlust’46 from Woerden, two goals by Sander van de Streek and a late goal by substitute Sean Klaiber proved sufficient: 0-3.
Van de Streek scored the first goal of the match after 18 minutes by hitting the ball in the second instance from a cross by Djevencio van der Kust.
Twenty minutes before the end, Van de Streek took advantage of a missasted header from keeper Romero Antonioli. The resistance of the courageous Sportlust’46 was then broken. Klaiber took care of the final chord in injury time.
The Woerden amateurs, who had surprisingly eliminated Quick Boys a month ago, still had opportunities especially in the first half via Kesly den Haag and Joshua Patrick, but Utrecht goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas saved twice.
Utrecht, which lost 6-1 to PSV on Sunday, then seized the initiative and had a star in Van de Streek. Anastasios Douvikas, among others, missed opportunities for more, but Klaiber had his sights on edge.
A setback for the Utrecht team was the failure of the injured Django Warmerdam before half time.
Sparta escapes
Sparta Rotterdam, so far the surprise this Eredivisie season and opponent of FC Utrecht on Sunday, came to OFC Oostzaan with a fright.
The last of the second division went down late: 1-3.
Substitute Tobias Lauritsen only scored the second Sparta goal in the final phase and determined the final score moments later.
In the first half, Sparta quickly took the lead through Jason Lokilo, but OFC came alongside thanks to a utilized penalty from Niels Butter.
An extension seemed imminent until the 81st minute, but the Norwegian Lauritsen ultimately decided otherwise.
