In the absence of Clarisse Agbegnenou, Manon Deketer won bronze in -63kg. Alpha Djalo (-81kg) lost against future Georgian world champion Grigalashvili.

Manon Deketer (-63kg) – ESBM Judo (93)
“We have a big French team, I did not feel legitimate there because I was not yet a medalist in the championship. I will feel in my place, but I wish even better to all the girls who remain.”

For her first world championships, Manon started her competition perfectly by having the upper hand over Sevinch ISOKOVA (UZB), yet supported by the entire Humo Arena. Our Frenchwoman then always won on ippon on Sanne VERMEER (NED) then Florentina IVANESCU (ROU). In the semi-finals, Manon was pinned down by world number 3 Catherine BEAUCHEMIN-PINARD (CAN). Remobilized for the fight for the bronze, Manon marks waza ari on Angelika SZYMANSKA (POL) then controls the fight until the final gong.

Alpha Djalo (-81kg) – PSG Judo (75)
Alpha quickly defeated Pawel Drzimal (POL) on ippon before meeting world number 1 and future world champion Tato Grigalashvili (GEO) who beat him with two waza ari.

“I lose. It doesn’t matter against whom, I’m not a fan of my opponents. If I want to claim to be high, you can’t just say to yourself “ah well that’s cool, I lost against GRIGALASHVILI, tonight I can sleep easy, “no, that’s not how I see things.”

Larbi BENBOUDAOUD – Director of High Performance
“Alpha DJALO started his competition well. In the second round, he met the Georgian who went to the end. He had however beaten him during the Zagreb Grand Prix. It’s a shame but he was up against a hell of a fighter.

Manon DEKETER won her first world medal in the same category as that of Clarisse AGBEGNENOU.

When you have a Frenchwoman at home who dominates the world, well, I say that pulls others up. Manon is proof of that. Clarisse is not there and she comes behind. Manon had a great competition. It’s a shame about the Canadian in the half because she had already beaten her twice. But she stayed in, knocked the Pole down. This medal does good for the others who arrive behind. Indeed, there are very few who would have put it on the selection at the start when I remind you, we train all our athletes so that they go and get medals.
