Judo State Championships: Pongau judoka won seven medals

The ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen convinced at the judo state championships at the weekend. The Pongauer won a total of four individual gold medals and victory in the mixed team competition. Pascal Auer caused the biggest surprise at home with his first national championship title.

BISHOPHOFEN. The judoka from ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen convinced at the weekend at the Austrian State Championships in Weiz. There were a total of seven medals for the local fighters, five of them in gold.

Title defense for Höllwart and Dengg

On Saturday, the first day of competition, the Sanjindo Judoka secured four championship titles. In the women’s category, Maria Höllwart and Elena Dengg were able to defend their titles from the previous year. On her 23rd birthday, Höllwart secured her sixth state championship title in the +78 kilogram category. The St. Johannerin was nominated for the World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan next week for the mixed team competition. Elena Dengg also fought for the state championship title in the 70 kilogram class without any problems.

Auer provided the surprise of the day

In the 66 kg class, Pascal Auer from Bischofshofen caused the biggest sensation of the day. The 24-year-old already prevailed in the second round against the top favorite Kimran Borchasvhili from Wels. In an exciting final fight, Auer triumphed in the golden score against Alexander Kaserer from Bad Ischl with beautiful leg technique and thus surprisingly won his first state championship title. Thomas Scharfetter from Pongau also became state champion for the first time in the -90 kilogram category. In the final, he defeated Adam Borchashvilli in the golden score with an ippon win.

Clear victory in the team competition

The great successes in the individual competitions on Saturday led to a clear victory in the team classification. On Sunday, the judoka from ESV Sanjindo added another success in the mixed team competition. In the mixed team competition, the Pongauers lived up to their role as favorites and were in a class of their own. Against Wels, Wimpassing and Stadlau, the local fighters got clear 5:1 successes. The teams from Wimpassing and Wels were relegated to second and third place. This rounded off an extremely successful weekend for ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen.
