Montilivi will be without First Division football between November 4 (Girona-Athletic) and December 30/31 (Girona-Rayo) due to the stoppage for the World Cup in Qatar, but before the World Cup begins, the stadium will be the scene of two international matches starring the Mexican national team. The first, against Iraq, will be played on Wednesday 9 November (9pm), with tickets between 10 and 20 euros; the second will be a week later (8:30 p.m.), a much more attractive Mexico-Sweden game that is expected to draw at least 7,000 spectators, at half-time, in the stands (tickets range from 15 to the 25 euros). They will be the last tests of Tata Martino’s team before they make their World Cup debut against Poland on the 22nd.
The good relations of the Mexican Football Federation with the City Group, and the fact that former Barça coach Tata Martino knows Catalonia well and knows that there are good facilities and an optimal temperature here, have favored his choice Girona for the last phase of preparation for the World Cup. Expectations for the first duel with Iraq are quite low. In Qatar 2022, Tata Martino’s team will be drawn in Group C along with Argentina, Poland and Saudi Arabia. Mexico will begin its journey in the World Cup on November 22 against Poland.
The list of players called up for the Girona matches will be provided by Martino in the next few hours, but it will not differ much from the one he did last month, with 31 footballers, for a tour of the USA with friendlies against Peru and Colombia. After playing in Montilivi, the coach will choose the 26 who will definitely go to Qatar.
