The twelve best teams in Spain are taking part from today in the Iberdrola badminton Cup, a top-level sporting event that is coming to Asturias for the first time. The host, the Oviedo Badminton Club, which won two gold and two bronze medals in the four editions held to date, presents itself with a renewed team with which it aspires to grow, without ruling out the fight for medals.
The Ukrainian Kristina Sotomayor leads the formation of the CBO, which is completed by Laura Álvarez, Laura Garijo, Leyre Suberviola, Amaia Torralba and Jana Villanueva. Fran Dacal and Alberto Zapico, player of the first team, are in charge of the technical direction. The competition, which is held at the Tudela Agüeria sports center, is organized into four groups of three teams, who play in a league that gives two of them access to the quarterfinals. From there, direct elimination to the title.
Oviedo will debut today at 12:30 against Ravachol de Pontevedra and later, starting at 3:30 pm, they will face Soria. Coach Fran Dacal indicates that “the girls on the team are usually very well positioned in the National League, which gives us guarantees to face the competition, which is special because it brings together the under-17 category and the absolute category in the individual and double”. The player Leyre Suberviola points out: “I hope we make a very good team like last year and try to perform as much as possible, since the matches are going to be complicated”.
The appointment was presented yesterday at the Oviedo City Hall with the presence of the president of the Spanish Badminton Federation, Andoni Asurmendi; who was accompanied by the president of Asturiana, David Casanova, and the Oviedo Councilor for Sports, Concepción Méndez. Asurmendi pointed out that “holding this competition in Oviedo is almost an obligation, as it was the first champion of the Iberdrola Cup. The sporting level is going to be very good.”
Nicolás García, president of the Oviedo Badminton Club, was “delighted” to organize the event. “We’re going to give it our all, as always, we aim to do a good job and if we can win it, it would be great,” said the Carbayón club leader.
