An umpire checked San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove’s ears for illegal goo at the behest of Mets manager Buck Showalter in the middle of the sixth inning of Game 3 of their AL wild-card series. National League on Sunday night.
Musgrove he was working on a hit with a 4-0 lead, and the spin rate increased on all six of his pitches. After Showalter took the field, crew chief Alfonso Marquez went to the mound, felt both of Musgrove’s ears and checked his cap and glove.
Fans yelled “Cheater!” in Musgrove, a member of the 2017 World Series champion Houston Astros who was discovered by Major League Baseball to have stolen signs.
The Astros cheating scandal rocked the sport. Musgrove has said that he is uncomfortable wearing his championship ring and wants “one that feels won” with his hometown Padres.
The umpires allowed him to keep throwing, and after striking out Tomás Nido for the second out, Musgrove waved his hand over his nose toward the Mets’ dugout.
