Roger Federer has admitted he was disappointed after Team Europe’s first Laver Cup loss. Last weekend in London, the World team beat the European team 13-8.
After defeating Team World in each of the first four editions of the Laver Cup, Team World finally earned their first victory against Team Europe.
Team Europe led 8-4 going into Sunday’s matches, but lost each of the three matches played on the final day. “Yes, of course I’m disappointed. I was in the team, I almost lost my voice and my hands hurt from cheering,” Federer said.
“We would like the result to be different. I said to Andy (Murray) in the locker room, I don’t like to lose. It’s not funny. It doesn’t leave the best taste, you know.
I think once you’ve been there and tasted success, it’s not the same. I hope tonight will be a bit of a pleasant evening again.
Of course, this weekend was a bit confusing for me. I had fun, but it’s a shame we couldn’t win.”
Federer suffered a defeat in his only game played
For his last tournament, Federer only played one doubles match.
Federer played doubles alongside Rafael Nadal. Federer and Nadal started their match well, but Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe came back strong to win 4-6 7-6(2) 11-9. After the match, Tiafoe received online criticism and a reporter even asked if he had apologized to Federer.
“He has a lot of apologies to make after the last 24 years, after beating everyone on the tour,” Tiafoe replied. “No I’m not going to apologize but I’m going to say thank you for inviting me to this amazing event you know what he did for the game you have to say thank you for what he has made for tennis.
He is a class man. I’m happy to know him, happy to call him a friend, happy to call him a colleague and wish him luck on his second act, but I won’t apologize.”
