After the worldwide dispute of the Football World Cup in Qatar, this announcement looks like a joke. It is, however, official. “Let’s not waste time: boycott, ban on European companies from participating in the project and diplomatic opposition”reacted directly to French MEP Manon Aubry (La France Insoumise).
Within the Belgian political world, we have not yet called for such categorical action. But some shared their dismay on social networks after the announcement of this award.
“To believe that we learned nothing from the choice of Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. Errare humanum est, perseverare diabolicum”tweeted Minister of State André Flahaut. Understand “to err is human, to persevere is evil”.
For his part, the president of the Committed (ex-cdH) Maxime Prévot wonders where we live. “This world is crazy”writes the president. “The 2029 Asian Winter Games (skiing, skating, etc.) have been awarded to Saudi Arabia in the middle of the desert. It will be in a futuristic city that does not yet exist. Obviously many have not yet grasped anything about climate challenges We go beyond stupidity”tackles the politician.
The group leader of this same party in the Brussels parliament does not say anything else. “The world is going decidedly crazy. Unimaginable and totally irresponsible”notes Céline Fremault.
Among the federal ministers, the ecologist Georges Gilkinet has already reacted. He ironically opposes this project. “Soon Wimbledon in the Sahara, the Tour de France in Antarctica and the World Cup in Qatar in refrigerated stadiums? I love sport. But seasonal and down to earth”indicates the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility.
