Iserlohn Kangaroos: Narrow defeat in an intense away game

Rasta Vechta II – Iserlohn Kangaroos 76:70 (24:17/36:37/59:55)

In the second representation of Rasta Vechta, the Iserlohn Kangaroos lost in the Barmer 2nd Basketball Bundesliga in the end. After they were able to equalize again to 63:63 in the last quarter, they lacked the penetrating power at the end. From the two-point area, they took a full 20 more throws than their opponents, but only hit four more baskets. Kangaroos head coach Dennis Shirvan showed mixed feelings: “We were a bit better than in the past few weeks, but today we had sand in the gears on offense.” At first he was annoyed about 24 points allowed in the first quarter, an improved defense left in the next quarter then only twelve points.

In a game in which no team could really break away, the Iserlohn team misplaced many easy layups. All the more surprising that they went into half-time with a narrow 37:36 lead. One of the reasons for this was that the Kangaroos were able to keep the lynchpin of the Vechta team, point guard Kevin Smit, with zero points in the first half and took him completely out of the game. In the last quarter, the Iserlohners had some good defensive sequences, but often lost the ball too easily in the subsequent offense.

“In the end we gave up the game,” stated Shirvan. “In the end we wanted to bang our heads against the wall too often and weren’t good for the team.” The coach didn’t want to blame his protégés for being combative, but they had to be more purposeful in their attacks. “The way we were last, you can’t take so many difficult threes, you have to attack the basket more often,” explained Dennis Shirvan, who demands more offensive mobility from his team.

The top scorer in Iserlohn was Toni Prostran with 16 points, followed by Joshua Dahmen and Michael Cubbage with twelve points each. Prostran was only surpassed by Vechta player JJ Culver (18) throughout the game. Samuel Mpacko (9) didn’t score at all in the second half, but contributed a strong six assists. “The team had a very good attitude today. With that we would have won at least two of the last three games”, noted Shirvan, who played against Vechta II with a deeper bench occupation.

Next Saturday the Kangaroos welcome the Itzehoe Eagles in the Matthias-Grothe-Halle. Maybe then the Kangaroos can implement Shirvan’s demand even better: “Everyone has to do their homework and stick to our game plan.”

Iserlohn Kangaroos: Michael Cubbage (12/2), Emil Loch (3/1), Joshua Dahmen (12/2), Marko Boksic (8), Toni Prostran (16/2), Mathias Groh, Elias Marei (4), Linus Trettin (6), Samuel Mpacko (9/2).
