first lady dr Jill Biden will attend game four of the World Series in Philadelphia on Tuesday, serving as a representative for the White House Cancer Initiative while also getting a chance to cheer on her Philadelphia Phillies.
The first lady will attend the game as part of the Biden administration’s Cancer Moonshot initiative, where she will join “players, umpires, coaches and fans in Major League Baseball’s annual Game 4 tradition to celebrate cancer.” To honor those affected as part of the league support and partnership with Stand Up To Cancer,” the White House said in a statement.
The Phillies are tied with the Houston Astros at one game apiece in the 2022 edition of the Fall Classic. The Phillies won the first game of the series in extra innings in an instant classic, but the Astros rallied and won the game 5-2 on Saturday night to level the series. Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Monday in Philadelphia.
Biden’s visit to cheer on the Phillies marks her second trip to the Commonwealth to attend a professional sports game in about two weeks. Earlier this month, she participated in the pre-NFL game coin toss before a game began between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. Biden was also at that game for a cancer awareness event. Some of the notoriously tough Philadelphia fans booed her during the coin toss of that game.
The First Lady has made her love for the Phillies known, mentioning them in official speeches and recently wearing a Phillies jersey when she stepped off Air Force One.
The first lady’s return to the city, where she has long-standing ties, comes as both she and other members of the Biden administration made a concerted effort to be in Pennsylvania ahead of the midterm elections. The state is home to one of the closest Senate races in the country — with Democratic former Lt. gov. John Fetterman versus Republican Mehmet Oz.
President Joe Biden has visited Pennsylvania several times in the run-up to the election for a mix of official and political events, an effort that contrasts with his approach of less frequent in-person appearances in many other competitive states across the country.
Most recently, President Biden visited Philadelphia on Friday as part of a joint campaign appearance with Vice President Kamala Harris – his 19th visit to the Commonwealth since taking office.
The Pennsylvania-born president, jokingly dubbed his “third senator” when he was a lawmaker representing Delaware in Congress, has also made it clear that he supports the Phillies.
During his speech in Philadelphia on Friday, the president pulled up one pant leg to reveal a red Phillies sock.
