Shin Tae-yong’s Indonesian National Team is in Group A of the 2022 AFF Cup with Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia and Brunei Darussalam. Unlike the 2020 AFF Cup which was held centrally in one country (Singapore), the 2022 AFF Cup was held in many countries.
All contestants for the 2022 AFF Cup have the opportunity to be the host. The 2022 AFF Cup format uses the existing format in 2018.
At that time, all the teams in the group phase will play two home and away matches. Later, the teams that occupy the first and second positions have the right to qualify for the semifinals of the 2022 AFF Cup.
According to the schedule, the Indonesian National Team will host Thailand and Cambodia. Then, Jordi Amat and his friends will visit the Brunei Darussalam and Philippines headquarters.
In order to bring the Indonesian national team to win the first AFF Cup trophy in history, coach Shin Tae-yong summoned the best players that Indonesia has. Shin Tae-yong even went so far as to fly to England and Belgium, so that Elkan Baggott and Sandy Walsh would be allowed by their respective clubs to appear in the 2022 AFF Cup.
Just to note, the 2022 AFF Cup is not included in FIFA’s agenda. Because of this, the clubs have the right to detain the player even if he gets a call from the Indonesian national team.
Sandy Walsh himself showed his insistence. He wants to defend the Indonesian national team in the 2022 AFF Cup, as preparation for the 2023 Asian Cup.
