Monica Puig clarifies her stance on Novak Djokovic after backlash.

Monica Puig stressed that she has nothing against Novak Djokovic and admires the Serbian and his amazing achievements. Earlier this week, Puig wondered how it was possible that Novak Djokovic reached the ATP Finals as Wimbledon champion, but Elena Rybakina did not.

Even though Djokovic arrived this week outside the top 8 of the Race to Turin list, he qualified for the ATP Finals thanks to the Grand Slam tournament qualification rule.

The WTA does not have this rule in place. Puig admitted she didn’t know the rule, but added that was no reason for some to be “super unfriendly and rude.”

“Ok people need to relax. As for my tweet yesterday, I was genuinely confused. I got clarification from many people who were very helpful, however, the others were super unfriendly and rude.

DO BETTER! No need to be grumpy for literally nothing. This is the last word I will say on this subject because discussing with all of you is exhausting. I have NOTHING against Djokovic.

I have met him several times and I admire all his achievements. He qualified and that’s great! I just didn’t understand the ATP and WTA rules,” Puig wrote on Twitter.

Puig clarifies his stance on Djokovic

Puig was apparently disgusted by some of the comments she received after asking how Djokovic qualified for the ATP Finals.

“As a former WTA player, I’ve been in countless meetings with the CEO and the board and discussed the rules and trying to make the circuits similar.

The thing is, I didn’t know the rules weren’t the same, that’s just it! I did not know. So stop coming for me. If you want to take me off your list, that’s fine, I don’t care.

I don’t care about likes and anything, but when you go after people like you did me, you make social media less enjoyable and more toxic. So… Have a nice Wednesday. I’ve had enough,” added Puig.
