Mexico is consolidated as one of the highest references in world tennis. The best exponents of the white sport will meet in the Yucatecan capital, and the fact is that the WTA confirmed the Mérida Open Akron, a tournament that will take place from February 20 to 26 starting next year.

The WTA 1000 in Guadalajara was a complete success in Jalisco, so the Mérida Open joins the great block of tennis tournaments that Mexico has. In total, the Aztec country has four professional competitions: Acapulco, Los Cabos, Guadalajara and Mérida (2 for men and 2 for women).

It will be the first edition of the contest in these lands and it will remain as a 250 tournament, a category that the Zapopan Open had, which for logistical reasons, changed places, and found the perfect venue in Mérida thanks to Mexique Eventos.

For his part, Gustavo Santoscoy, Director of the contest, highlighted the great tennis tradition that exists in the state.

“In Mérida we find fabulous facilities, an incredible climate, and an excellent disposition of the presidency of the club that will host it, the Yucatán Country Club.” Santoscoy asserted.

Sloane Stephens, Veronica Kudermetova and Sara Sorribes Tormo will go down in history as the monarchs of the Zapopan tournament, seeking to trace a new history in the Yucatan peninsula.
