The NBA is notoriously a progressive sports association, which has always been able to intercept and represent the requests of minorities. Probably, the main reason is to be found in the DNA of the League itself, born and raised as probably the most successful place to which the African American component of the United States could aspire. It is no coincidence that over the years the NBA and the world of American Hip-Hop have gone hand in hand, forging a double thread. Today the connection has weakened, but nonetheless the League still remains mainly in the hands of African American athletes.
Also from a religious point of view, the NBA has recorded some episodes of particular interest. Above all, the case of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, aka Lewis Alcindor, cannot fail to be reported jr. The award-winning champion first of the Milwaukee Bucks, and then of the Los Angeles Lakers changed his name in 1971 following his conversion to Islam. In doing so, Kareem followed the example of Cassius Clay, then Muhammad Ali, who did the same in 1964. From that moment on, no more religious incidents were reported in the League for a long time. But something could change in the next few days!

This time, however, Islam has nothing to do with it, but Judaism is the religion that is making the whole NBA talk about it. Or rather, Orthodox Judaism, of which Ryan Turell is a faithful believer. The boy, out of Yeshiva University, is currently entering professional basketball for the back door, in G-League, the minor league of the NBA. In his first official match with Motor City Cruise, affiliated with the Detroit Pistons, Turell actually broke another great taboo still alive in American basketball: playing with a hat on.
As can be seen in the video published on YouTube by the official channel of the NBA G-League, in fact, Turell went down on the playing field with the typical Jewish Kippah headgear. The video has already gone viral, also because it makes you smile that the hat almost gets lost under the player’s thick curly hair. Beyond any possible consideration on the aesthetic aspect, however, the symbolic value of the gesture remains. The boy found a way, not an easy one, to reconcile his strong faith in the Orthodox Jewish religion with his greatest passion, as well as his work. For now, the G-League has been the scene of this new, important integration goal. Who knows if Turell will one day conquer the real NBA courts, becoming the first Orthodox Jew to play in the most important basketball league in the world.
