The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that the inaugural Olympic Esports Week will be held in Singapore from June 22-25, 2023. The highlight is the first live final of the Olympic Esports Series.
The event is a global virtual and simulated sports competition developed in collaboration with International Sports Federations (IFs) and building on the successes of last year’s Olympic Virtual Series.
The IOC’s announcement is “the next big step in supporting the development of virtual sports within the Olympic Movement and encouraging collaboration with gamers,” the statement said.
Olympic Esports Week aims to support the growth of eSports
IOC President Thomas Bach said: “The inaugural Olympic Esports Week is an important milestone in our commitment to support the growth of virtual esports within the Olympic Movement. We believe that the exciting new format of our virtual esports competition, which will host the first Once live finals are held, one opportunity is to continue collaborating with esports players and create new opportunities for players and fans alike.”
From May 13 to June 23, 2021, the Olympic Virtual Series started for the first time. Baseball (eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020), cycling (Zwift), rowing (Open format), sailing (Virtual Regatta) and car racing (Gran Turismo) were nominated as the first virtual disciplines.
Which disciplines and simulations there will be at Olympic Esports Week has not yet been announced. This should be done together with the information on participation in early 2023.
