In Brussels, dozens of rioters overturned and set fire to cars and electric scooters, and people also threw bricks at cars. Police intervened after one person suffered facial injuries, a spokeswoman said. Brussels mayor Philippe Close urged people to stay away from the center and stressed that the authorities were doing everything to keep the streets orderly. By order of the police, metro and tram services were suspended.
Riots also occurred in the cities of Antwerp and Liège. “It is sad to see how a few individuals are taking advantage of the situation to go on a rampage,” said Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden.
In the neighboring Netherlands, police reported violence in Rotterdam, where riot police tried to disperse a group of 500 soccer fans who threw pyrotechnics and glass at law enforcement officers. The media also mentioned the riots in Amsterdam and The Hague.
