The first recycled glass tennis court is inaugurated for the Davis Cup by Rakuten Final 8 in Malaga

MÁLAGA, 20 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Kosmos Tennis and Ecovidrio, the non-profit entity in charge of managing the recycling of glass container waste in Spain, in collaboration with the Malaga City Council, have inaugurated this Sunday the first tennis court created from glass from of the recycling of glass containers from Malaga.

The rehabilitated court, located on Calle Actriz La Tirana, inside El Duende Park, will be a meeting point for all tennis fans in the capital of the Costa del Sol.

The track has been restored thanks to the glass deposited by the people of Malaga in the more than 1,750 green containers in the city. Thus, they have explained that more than 22,000 kilos of glass have been necessary to carry out the reform whose processing and recycling has been carried out through an innovative and pioneering technique.

The new track has a design and image made by the Davis Cup by Rakuten Final 8, within the framework of the agreement by which Ecovidrio became an official partner of the tournament.

The inauguration, which took place this Sunday, was attended by David Ferrer, director of the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals; the professional tennis player and participant in the tournament, Roberto Bautista; the Councilor for Operational Services and Limasam of the Malaga City Council, Teresa Porras; the manager of Málaga Sports and Events, Ignacio Gómez Camarero; and Borja Martiarena, Marketing Director of Ecovidrio.

On the other hand, they have indicated that aware that sustainability is a long-distance race, Kosmos Tennis and Ecovidrio reiterate their commitment to promote sustainability in the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals, “in order to contribute to reducing the negative impacts and maximize the positives related to the environmental, economic and social aspects of the event”.

As the main novelty in the action against climate change and mitigation of the impact of the tournament, the carbon footprint of this 2022 edition will be calculated for the first time. Thus, continuous improvement is guaranteed, preventing and reducing the emissions caused, and promoting the commitment in the fight against climate change.

Finally, they recalled that according to the latest data for 2021, the people of Malaga recycled a total of 8,574 tons of glass, an average of 14.9 kilograms per inhabitant. The city has 1,752 glass containers, which translates to an average of 330 inhabitants per container.
