Brescia always behind in the score, even if the long comeback leads to a head-to-head final in which the greater strength of the Bolognese emerges
The feat fails to the Lioness, forced to yield in front of the battleship Virtus Bologna by Sergio Scariolo. Brescia first sinks, then gets back up, but finally can’t do anything to avoid the defeat 89-77. After a first half to forget, the long-awaited reaction of the hosts arrives, however not enough to overturn the fate of the match; after all, the difference between the two teams, in terms of roster depth and physicality, was felt for the entire 40 minutesnot giving Germani any real chance of victory who, with a better start to the race, might have managed to get a different result. Good performances by Della Valle and Massinburg, those of Cobbins and Cournooh are solid. On the other hand, the new signing Taylor disappoints, who after a good debut in the Eurocup, ends with only 2 points on the scoresheet.
The match: wet dust at the start for Brescia, who struggles to find rhythm in attack in the very first moments of the match. Virtus, on the other hand, scores continuously and, after less than 5 minutes of play, escapes to 16-6, thanks to an offensive phase that manages to exploit the strengths of all the players involved. Della Valle to play the charge between him, scoring 6 points in a row that bring the Lioness back in contact on 16-12. Germani continues to fight with the iron (35% from the field in the first 10′), but the rebound fight and a triple from Nikolic allow her to stay in the game, closing the first half down 25-19. In the second quarter, the hosts’ difficulties increase, due to Camara’s athleticism and Teodosic’s inventions, capable of putting the opponents in difficulty at every pass. Bologna never stops and continues to score points, prolonging the landlords’ blackout and building a partial that takes them ahead 49-29, before Cournooh’s triple on the buzzer closes the first half with the score 49-32. The match resumed as it was interrupted, with Virtus playing lightly and effectively, while Brescia scored with a dropper, also thanks to a host defense that conceded few chances. Brescia’s first (timid) attempts at recovery were led by the Massinburg-Cobbins axis, who with some positive ideas instilled confidence in their teammates, until they got closer to 46-58. The triple and the two free throws by Teodosic momentarily lengthen the distances, but do not extinguish the blue-and-white hopes, kept alight by Massinburg, author of 12 points in the quarter and the archery that allows the Lioness to enter the last 10 minutes behind 58-67.
The last period opens with Cournooh’s 5 points in a row, bringing his own back to -4. A couple of ingenuities risk complicating the situation again, but Germani is good at reacting immediately and avoiding another Bolognese escape. Brescia continues to fight, but as the minutes go by, the tiredness of Coach Magro’s boys increases, making the gap between the two teams clear. Virtus just has to manage the advantage until the final siren, which delivers the victory to the black Vs with a score of 89-77. Brescia will now be engaged on Tuesday against Bursaspor Basketbolfor the ninth day of the Eurocup.
