New York Jets receivers coach Miles Austin has been suspended for a minimum of one year by the NFL for violating league betting policy.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed the suspension Friday. Austin will appeal his case, which is why McCarthy said the league would not comment further.

The former wide receiver wasn’t on the sidelines Thursday when the Jets lost 19-3 to the Jaguars.

Austin attorney and agent Williams P. Deni Jr. said in a statement sent to The Associated Press that Austin did not bet on football games.

“The NFL has suspended Miles Austin for betting on non-NFL professional sports and gaming tables from a lawful application,” Deni said. Miles did not bet on NFL games and did not violate the NFL Personnel Betting Policy. He has fully cooperated with the NFL’s investigation and will appeal.

According to NFL betting policy, betting on sports is prohibited, even if it is not NFL games.

Austin is in his second season on Robert Saleh’s staff with the Jets.

During his 10 season playing career, Austin caught 361 passes for 5,273 yards and 37 touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles.
