Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Philips should not count on playing minutes against ex-club Leeds United next Wednesday. According to coach Pep Guardiola, the midfielder is overweight and must therefore miss the match.

The transfer of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds to Manchester City has not been a success so far. The 27-year-old midfielder has charmed the English mid-engine in recent seasons and received his top transfer to the national champion last summer.

At City, partly due to injuries, he only made four appearances. Nevertheless, national coach Gareth Southgate selected him for the World Cup in Qatar. Despite the two appearances, the midfielder did not return from the Middle East in the best condition.

Pep Guardiola, for example, made it clear that Phillips should not hope for playing minutes on Wednesday, when City resumes the competition against his ex-club Leeds. “He’s not injured, he’s come back overweight,” Guardiola said. “I do not know why. He has not returned to the condition to train and play. That’s why he can’t play. If he can be used, he will play, because we need him.”
