Cohen played a total of 459 games for Fulham between 1956 and 1969. He had to end his career due to a serious knee injury at the age of 29, yet he has the fourth highest number of starts in the club’s history and a statue of him stands outside Craven Cottage. “One of our greatest players and gentlemen has left,” Fulham said.
At the club level, the former right back did not have significant success, but he made up for it in the national team. He was part of England’s only World Cup triumph in 1966, and also played in all six of Albion’s games at the tournament. He completed a total of 37 matches in the national team.
Everyone at Fulham Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest ever players – and gentlemen – George Cohen MBE.

Of England’s world champions, only Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst are still alive. “I have learned the very sad news that my teammate and friend George Cohen has passed away. Everyone will agree that George was a wonderful person. My thoughts are with his wife Daphne and the entire family,” Hurst said on Twitter.
