The VUB will build a center of expertise in combat sports on its Etterbeek campus

In the future center of expertise, training will take place in two rooms. One of them will be equipped with a fixed and mobile boxing ring and punching bags, and the other with tatami mats for judo, karate and taekwondo. The Brussels combat sports clubs and the Flemish Boxing League will be able to train there. These spaces will be built next to the existing sports infrastructure of the VUB, which will make it possible to share parking spaces, showers, changing rooms and reception.

The VEC will also have a space devoted to education and research. The VUB’s “Sport&Society” research group, which has been studying the social added value of sport and how to optimize it for years, will provide (together with other VUB scientists) support and training programs “specific training” to the different organizations that will work on the VEC. Thanks to this, young people will be better supported and encouraged.

The VUB foresees a cost of four million euros for all the works. The project is supported by the Flemish government with 725,000 euros, the Flemish Fund of Brussels (700,000 euros) and the Flemish Boxing League (250,000 euros). The rest will be paid for by the university.
