Then there are names of two out of three.
Danish badminton star Viktor Axelsen joins Jonas Vingegaard in the fight for one of Denmark’s most prestigious awards.
Axelsen is the second finalist for the Sports Name of the Year award. This is stated by the Danish Sports Confederation and Team Denmark.
The Tour de France winner Vingegaard was announced a week ago as the first of three names to fight for the prize.
Axelsen and Vingegaard will be joined by one more before the award is handed out on 7 January at the Sport 2022 award ceremony.
It’s only been a few days since Viktor Axelsen crowned an absolutely insane season with another title when he won the season finale for the fourth time in his career.
This year he has also won the WC, All England, Indonesia Open, French Open and much more.
Team Denmark’s chairman, Lars Krarup, is deeply impressed that Viktor Axelsen manages to maintain a towering level year after year.
“Viktor Axelsen has again in 2022 delivered a demonstration of power on the international badminton scene. He has taken the throne as the world’s undisputed best badminton player and won pretty much everything there is to win.’
“Viktor is constantly looking to become more and more skilled, and this is fantastically inspiring. After another incredible season, Viktor Axelsen is among the greats in Danish sports history,’ says Team Denmark’s chairman, Lars Krarup.
The Sports Name of the Year award has been awarded since 1991. Axelsen has the opportunity to complete a hat-trick of nominations if he receives the award this time.
Fynboen also received the award in 2017 and at Sport 2021, which was held in January this year.
