Baseball: a new wind in Marieville

By Julien Dubois (Local Journalism Initiative)

The Marieville Baseball Association primarily targets young people for development. After five years of presidency, Martin Girard decides to turn the page.

Martin Girard leaves the Marieville Baseball Association in good health. In a few days, the president will leave his place with the feeling of having accomplished his mission during a complicated period represented by the COVID years. “It’s one of my main sources of pride,” he explains. We have between 110 and 120 members in seven teams in addition to our rally cap (children under 7, Editor’s note). Finances are sound without having had the need to increase the price of licenses. We were able to stay the course during confinement with volunteers who remained faithful. »

“Sixty additional young people could join us. And these young people invite their friends. More people on the pitch means more popularity. –Martin Girard

To explain his decision, the leader believes that the Association needs a new impetus. “I’ve been in the job for five years. My professional obligations mean that I no longer have time to take care of the Association. The organization certainly needs a revival. »

The league covers a large territory, from Marieville to Saint-Césaire via Richelieu and Saint-Mathias. “The enthusiasm is present, but we do not benefit from a large pool of population, continues Martin Girard. We are a small association. But the open doors, organized by Vincent Desprès this fall, brought people together. Sixty additional young people could join us. And these young people invite their friends. More people on the pitch means more popularity. »

Local competition

Passionate about the ball and the bat, the future ex-president ensures that he will remain involved in the league once his term is over. “I love taking care of young people. Thanks to our association, they have the chance to practice an organized sport with official matches. But competition is not our goal. We want to stay local, and then the coaches and players of each team can participate in tournaments. Maybe my successors will, but we are really a small pool. In any case, we will continue to fight for our members. »

The league is growing and training begins indoors to prepare for the summer season with something new. “After a first in 2022, our U15 team will be renewed, smiles Martin Girard. We even think we have U17 training! »
