Basketball – upheaval in Bamberg: Brose sells shares

Bamberg (SID) – The former German basketball series champion Brose Bamberg is facing a change. After around ten years, the automotive supplier company Brose is giving up its role as sole shareholder of the club at the end of the season. This was announced by the chairman of the supervisory board, Michael Stoschek, in a press conference on Tuesday. The step also involves a change of name, but according to Stoschek, Brose wants to continue to be the main sponsor of the Bundesliga club “for the next few years”.

“Although the Brose company and its shareholders have invested around 85 million euros in Bamberg basketball in recent years and the company is in a good financial position, we are prepared to sell all our shares in Bamberger Basketball GmbH for the symbolic price of 1 euro at the end of the season “Stoschek said. This is “a very generous gesture”.

According to Stoschek, there are three interested parties, but the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Brose Group would like more investors. “In the future, I expect a much greater commitment from Bamberg’s economy, from the Bamberg city council and from the Bamberg city administration,” said the 75-year-old. He sees the withdrawal as “the chance for a new beginning”.

Brose wanted to withdraw as a shareholder as early as 2020, but canceled the plans. The club plays its games in the Brose Arena. Stoschek suggested that the team could be called the Bamberg Baskets until a new team sponsor was found.

Since Brose became the main sponsor (2006/07), the Franconians have won eight championships and five cups. However, the last title win so far was in 2017.
