After collapsing in the game against Cincinnati, Damar Hamlin continues to fight for his life. Now his uncle talks about the health of the Buffalo pro and provides dramatic insights. Long-term damage is feared.
DAmar Hamlin remains in critical condition following his cardiac arrest during the National Football League (NFL) game against the Cincinnati Bengals. This was announced by his team, the Buffalo Bills. Hamlin is currently in the intensive care unit of a Cincinnati hospital and remains sedated. Hamlin’s uncle Dorrian Glenn gave more details about his health on ESPN.
Accordingly, Hamlin’s condition has improved compared to the lecture, but there are concerns about possible damage to the lungs. “I know he’s fighting. We will continue to pray. He’s in good hands with the medical staff, the doctors did a great job,” Glenn said. Hamlin’s player agent Ron Butler also told ESPN that the oxygen levels in the footballer’s blood had improved.
The family also gave further details of the dramatic minutes and hours after the collapse. Glenn said Hamlin had to be resuscitated twice – once on the field at Paycor Stadium and once after arriving at the hospital.
Hamlin collapsed after a usual defensive action during the Buffalo Bills’ game at the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday (local time). His opponent Tee Higgins had unluckily hit him in the chest with his right shoulder, whereupon Hamlin collapsed. The game was stopped when the Bengals were 7-3.
Of the shocking moment that most of Hamlin’s family watched in front of the TV, Glenn said, “At first we thought it was just a regular hit and that he’s going to bounce back.” The way Hamlin’s seven-year-old brother did Damir cried, but upset him. “And then, when ten minutes had passed and then 20 minutes, I knew it was something serious.” The family then drove the almost 500 kilometers from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati in two cars to help the injured Hamlin .
Sympathy for Hamlin’s fate is immense
It is not yet clear when the game will resume. This week, however, that will not be the case, as the NFL announced. The final day of the regular season is scheduled for next weekend. Both the Bills and the Bengals are already qualified for the playoffs, but still have room to improve their starting positions.
The solidarity within the NFL is huge. All teams chose a photo of Hamlin’s jersey with the number three as their social media profile picture. A fundraiser that the Buffalo Bills pro started a long time ago to raise money online for toys for needy children saw a huge turnout. In the first few hours after Hamlin’s collapse, donations grew from just under $3,000 to more than $4 million (around €3.8 million). More than 150,000 people took part in the campaign.
