Olympic champion and world champion Christopher Grotheer won the skeleton home world cup in Winterberg ahead of Axel Jung.

In the continuous rain, the 30-year-old from BRC Thüringen beat the Olympic silver medalist from BSC Sachsen Oberbärenburg by 0.39 seconds and took the lead in the overall World Cup with his second win of the season. Third place went to Brit Matt Weston. Felix Keisinger from WSV Königssee came in seventh after a fall at the end of the finish line.

“The first run was fair, the track deteriorated quite a bit at the back. But the start was better for me and the run was good,” said Grotheer.

Jungk was satisfied with the result but not with his performance. “After the first run I had the feeling for the first time in the season that the material works, I can win on my own. It’s really annoying that I then put in such a buck. I went into the second run motivated and then I push the sled diagonally off the track into the waterfall, then you don’t take any speed with you into the track and it won’t work anymore,” said Jungk.

Also noticeable was the improving form of the Chinese around Olympic bronze medalist Yan Wengang, who achieved his best result this winter with fifth place. Starting this season, the Chinese will be coached by Dirk Matschenz from Ilmenau, who was national coach from April 2018 to March 2020.
