European Super League organizers win in court

The European Super League (ESL), launched in 2021, caused a tremor in the football world. Twelve of Europe’s biggest clubs announced a new league that should be more financially lucrative. But after fierce resistance from the fans, the project collapsed just 48 hours later and the twelve withdrew. Only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus remained true to the idea.

On the part of Uefa and Fifa, the clubs were threatened with consequences. But it won’t come to that. A court in Madrid spoke out in favor of the organizers of the ESL “A22 Sports Management” after another appeal. Accordingly, teams may also take part in competitions outside of Uefa and Fifa. The judgment also protects the clubs from possible sanctions. (mab)
