Anish Giri has caused a major stunt in the fourth round of the Tata Steel tournament. The Dutch grandmaster defeated Magnus Carlsen, world champion since 2013 and eight-time tournament winner in Wijk aan Zee.
Carlsen made a horrific mistake during the match. He offered Giri, the number seven in the world ranking, the chance to attack with his two runners and that opportunity was well spent on Giri.
Thanks to the victory, Giri remains the leader in Wijk aan Zee.
At his tournament debut in 2011 (he was then sixteen years old), Giri was also once too strong for title holder Carlsen (then twenty years old). Since then they met ten times in Wijk aan Zee; nine times it was a draw and last year Carlsen won.
Carlsen is an eight-time winner of the leading Dutch tournament, Giri is still chasing his first overall victory in Wijk aan Zee.
Carlsen does not talk about an eventful chess match with Niemann in the Netherlands
