On Wednesday, both prosecutors and defense attorneys made their opening statements in the Colleton County Courthouse. Each side took about 30 minutes to present their arguments.

Murdoch was seen breaking down in tears as his defense attorney Dick Harpoodley described to the jury the horrors of the injuries Maggie and Paul suffered and how it traumatized Alex.

“Alex, get up,” Harboudlian ordered his client. “This is Alex Murdock. Alex was the loving father of Paul and the loving husband of Maggie. …Their relationship and Alex and Maggie’s relationship was warm, and you won’t hear a witness say how they went to a baseball game a week ago and how they sent texts and emails that indicated a loving relationship.”

The lawyer, Creighton Waters, paints a different picture of Murdock.

He told the jury that key evidence in the case involved cell phones belonging to Alex and the victims.

Although Murdoch insists he was not present when his wife and child were killed, he said cellphone evidence would prove otherwise.

He said a video shot on Paul’s phone minutes before the murders allegedly showed Alex was with his wife and child.

“At 8:44 and 55 seconds, Paul recorded a video. He was in the kennel because he was talking to his friend about him, and you ask this friend why his friend had a dog. They thought there was something wrong with the puppies and his tail. Paul told his friend, “He was filming it to send… you’ll hear from witnesses who recognize Paul’s voice, Maggie’s voice, and Alex’s voice,” Waters said.
