The Bavarian Swabians are getting down to business these days. On Monday evening, FC Augsburg presented new signing number six in Nathanael Mbuku. The 20-year-old attacking player, who played in all the junior national teams in France, comes from the French first division club Stade Reims and has been given a four-and-a-half-year contract with FCA until June 30, 2027.

“After really successful years in which I got a lot of playing time, it’s time for me to take a new step,” Mbuku is quoted as saying in the Augsburg press release: “Many French people make their breakthrough in the Bundesliga and I want to, too develop as a player with a lot of work and diligence. The talks with those responsible at FCA convinced me because FCA plays attractive and attacking football. That’s why I can hardly wait to be on the pitch with my new team-mates.”

With 80 appearances in Ligue 1 (six goals, three assists), the dribbling winger is one of the players in his age group with the most appearances in Europe’s top leagues. Left winger Mbuku should help revitalize FCA’s offensive and create new options for head coach Enrico Maassen. The transfer was actually planned for half a year later.

Reuter promises “another exciting player”

“The move from Nathanael Mbuku was originally planned for next summer, but when the opportunity arose to sign him in winter, we got down to business,” explains Stefan Reuter, FCA’s sporting director: “Mbuku is a fast player and technically adept attacking player who, despite his very young age, has already completed more than two seasons as a regular in Ligue 1. Looking to the future, FCA fans can look forward to another exciting player who we will give time to get to know to get into the Bundesliga.”

At the start of the new calendar year, the Augsburgers narrowly lost in Dortmund (3:4), then won their home game against Gladbach (1:0), before the second defeat in 2023 followed last Saturday in Freiburg (1:3).
