Edin Terzic was not allowed to announce at his press conference on Friday afternoon that Youssoufa Moukoko would extend his expiring contract with Borussia Dortmund. But of course he also knew for a long time – and answered the questions about his 18-year-old attacker with a smile.

“Of course we’re happy that there will now be clarity in the near future,” said the coach. “Youssoufa is a player who has so much potential, who is far from finished, but has been developing steadily here for years. Few would have believed him capable of the development he has made in recent months in July. I’m simple happy about every day that I get to work with Youssoufa and I would be happy if this lasts for a long time.”

“We always saw the talent in Youssoufa”

On Thursday evening it was leaked that Moukoko had decided to stay at BVB and thus resisted the lure of even more powerful clubs and an even higher salary. The sometimes heated struggle for the future of the new international and World Cup driver has ended after many months.

Did the many speculations become a burden for Moukoko? “I didn’t notice that on the training ground, he’s trying very hard,” Terzic contradicted. “These discussions, which involve contracts, terms or numbers, don’t take place between players and coaches here.” That is up to sports director Sebastian Kehl, who gave the Moukoko side an ultimatum via kicker on Monday – with success.

“Youssoufa is someone who always gives 100 percent in every training session and who tries to put that into practice in the games,” enthused Terzic, also commenting on the remarkable record on the first 15 match days (14 appearances, six goals, four templates) and the following World Cup nomination: “I do believe that it hasn’t been easy in the last few weeks and months because it went very quickly. It went uphill rapidly. It went so fast – very few of you would have expected that .” Terzic and his BVB colleagues, on the other hand, do very well. “We have always seen the talent in Youssoufa. And we support him in that.”
