DFB Pokal: Stuttgart beats Paderborn, Union Berlin eliminated

The cup match day begins with a shock for Union Berlin. With the looming change from ex-real star Isco to the irons, the Fischer club provided a transfer hammer. But things turned out differently: On Tuesday afternoon, the deal collapsed from one moment to the next – almost on the home straight. Isco had even completed the medical check at Union.

The fact that the Berliners get along quite well without star players is shown in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup in the evening. In the sold-out Alte Försterei, the home team throws VfL Wolfsburg out of the competition despite falling behind early on.

In the 5th minute, the wolves really started the cup fight with a goal from Luca Waldschmidt. Union is not shocked by this setback either. Just seven minutes later, Robin Knoche equalized after a set piece (12′). The struggle then lasts until the final phase. Then it is Kevin Behrens, who came on for the ex-YB striker Siebatcheu, who is concerned in the 80th minute for the decisive goal for the Berlin team to make it 2-1.

Union coach Urs Fischer said about the hectic day with the Isco basket after the cup victory: “The preparation was certainly not optimal. But we didn’t want to use that as an excuse. And after a short moment, the team was there.”

Konstantinos Mavropanos wrote the story of the second round of 16 game of the day. The Greek central defender from Stuttgart scored an involuntary record goal in his team’s 2-1 victory in the round of 16 against Paderborn from the 2nd Bundesliga. The 25-year-old scored “the own goal from the greatest distance in the history of the DFB Cup” on Tuesday, as the German Football Association writes on its English Twitter channel. After a throw-in by Waldemar Anton, Mavropanos wants to pass goalkeeper Florian Müller in the fourth minute, but shoots the ball into the goal to make it 0-1. According to the pay TV broadcaster Sky, the distance is 48.1 meters.

The faux pas remains for the Stuttgart but without consequences. Gil Dias (86th) and Serhou Guirassy (95th) make a late turnaround in favor of the 15th in the Bundesliga. (cat/SDA)
