Fedombal announces the start of the National Women’s Development League U18

The Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal) announced the start this Saturday of the U18 National Women’s Development League, with the participation of 120 athletes from eight franchises, distributed in four regions.

The championship is scheduled to begin this Saturday, at 11:00 in the morning, at the San Lázaro club sports center, with the celebration of two games and the official opening ceremony at the end of the first.

The information was given this Wednesday by Junior Páez, administrative director of Fedombal, chaired by Rafael Uribe, in a meeting with the media in his meeting room at the Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto Sports Palace.

Along with Páez were the Cuban coach Ariel Portuondo, director of Fedombal’s Women’s National Teams Project; Ramón Ceballos, technical director; Niurka Herrera, exglory of women’s basketball and the national team; and the coach Miguel Reyes, among other leaders of the participating franchises.

The eight franchises that will see action were distributed in four zones, of two teams each, that in the East with Cañeras del Este and Guerreras de Monte Plata, and in Greater Santo Domingo will be the Tigreras del Distrito and Ladies de Santo Domingo.

The Cibao area is made up of the Monumentales de Santiago and Mariposas de La Vega, and in the south, the Famosas del Sur (Baní-Espaillat) and Reyna del Sur, from Barahona.

Páez stressed that “the celebration of this event comes to fill a non-existent space in Dominican women’s basketball and that it is expected to cover all the expectations raised to promote this branch that needs so much support from everyone.”

For her part, Portuondo said that “by starting this contest, the gap is opened to encourage and develop players under 18 years of age, in order to subsequently set up a championship for girls 14 years of age or less.”
