He’s back! Fluminense agrees to sign Marcelo — Fluminense Football Club

The kid who left Xerém to conquer the world is back home. This Friday (24/02) Fluminense agreed to hire Marcelo. The 34-year-old left-back, one of the best in history in his position, signed a contract until December 2024, with an option to renew until the end of 2025. years at Real Madrid.

“It’s even difficult to express the meaning that this moment represents for me. I’ve been dreaming of returning to my origins for many years, to the team that trained me and taught me what I know about football”, declared Marcelo.

Marcelo’s first contact with the tricolor fans will be through a video that will be shown on the Maracanã screen before the match against Portuguesa, which takes place this Saturday (25/02), at 4 pm, for the ninth round of the Carioca Championship.

The player will land in Rio de Janeiro to join the squad commanded by coach Fernando Diniz in about two weeks, after completing the procedures for his move. The left-back will be registered by the club for the Copa Libertadores de América dispute.

Marcelo is one of the great jewels of Fluminense’s youth teams. In 2005, aged just 17, Moleque de Xerém was promoted to the professional ranks, assuming full ownership of the position the following year. The athlete defended the tricolor armor in 40 matches and scored six goals. For the club, he won the Campeonato Carioca and Taça Rio titles in 2005. His skill and technique attracted the attention of the main teams in Europe. He transferred to Spanish football in November 2006. But it was just a see you later.

In addition to becoming one of the great idols in the history of Real Madrid, a club that he defended for 15 years and won 25 titles – including five European Champions Leagues, four Club World Cups and six Spanish Championships –, Marcelo also built a career in the national team Brazilian. In all, there were 58 games wearing Amarelinha, with six goals, the 2013 Confederations Cup title and the silver and bronze medals at the London-2012 and Beijing-2008 Olympic Games, respectively.

Marcelo is the eighth reinforcement for 2023 announced by Tricolor, which had already closed with striker Keno, right-back Guga, left-back Jorge, attacking midfielder Lima, defender Vitor Mendes and goalkeeper Vitor Eudes. The club also renewed with important players for the team, such as striker Germán Cano, midfielders Paulo Henrique Ganso, Jhon Arias and Michel Araújo, midfielders André and Martinelli, right-back Samuel Xavier and defenders Manoel and David Braz, in addition to to formalize the permanence of coach Fernando Diniz.
