These insignia are still causing a stir almost three years after the death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant. In addition, they are obviously worth a lot of money to many bidders.
Kobe Bryant jersey auction: Sotheby’s expects top bid of $7 million
Currently up for sale is Bryant’s Lakers jersey from the 2007-08 NBA season, the season in which Bryant won his only MVP title. The Online Auction by the New York auction house Sotheby’s runs until February 9th.
As Sotheby’s announced on Thursday, it is quite likely that the hammer will strike at an amount of around seven million dollars.
However, that would still not be the most expensive jersey ever sold by a basketball player. This is by Michael Jordan and was auctioned last September for 10.01 million dollars. Jordan wore the jersey during the 1998 season in which he won his last NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls. This season has been known as “The Last Dance” not only since the Netflix docuseries.

As for Bryant’s jersey, Sotheby’s pledges that the five-time NBA champion wore the signed jersey in 25 games during said 2007-08 season, as well as to accept his MVP award. Sotheby’s names the previous owner of the jersey as anonymous.
Kobe Bryant, who alongside Michael Jordan and LeBron James has been considered “perhaps the best basketball player of all time” for years, died on January 26, 2020 in a helicopter crash near Malibu, California. In the helicopter, which Bryant piloted himself, were his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people. They too died in the accident.
