If you use your Suunto 9 or Suunto Spartan to also go out on a road bike, you probably don’t want to wear it on your wrist. If you want to consult the data while pedaling, it is better to carry it on the handlebar or on the stem. The normal thing is to buy one of the rubber supports, place said support on the handlebar and tie the watch to it. I don’t like how that support looks on the bike and it’s also hard for me to tie the watch because the brake cables often make the process difficult. Solution, try to use the same system that Garmin has and how well it works ????
Introduction
One of the great advantages of Suunto Spartan and Suunto 9 is how big its screen is and the possibility of adding 7 fields in one view. From my point of view, this makes the watch very useful for when you’re riding a road bike, an activity where you usually have more time to consult the data on the screen.
Having owned several Garmin Edges and the Forerunner 935, the ease with which the GPS is attached and detached from the bike is one of the things I’ve missed about the Suunto. Also, specifically on a road bike, wearing the watch in a forward position greatly favors reading the data.
Although Suunto doesn’t offer anything similar (they have chosen to offer the traditional rubber mount), luckily with a bit of imagination I managed to be able to use my Suunto 9 practically in the same way as the Forerunner 935. Honestly, if not because I already had a FR935 quick release kit, in my life it would have occurred to me that the support of the Forerunner 935 could become compatible with Suunto. It has been quite a stroke of luck!
Process
We are going to need to check that our Suunto 9/Spartan has a quick release strap. I think all Suunto 9 have this system and some of the Spartans I know that too. If it did not have it, you can always choose to buy one of this type like the ones that I put in this link. Actually, any 24 mm strap with quick-release pins is fine and being for sports, I would recommend that it be made of silicone. Unfortunately the Spartan Ultra has a different system and is not compatible with this solution.
To find out if our watch has this type of strap, you just have to turn it around and see if there is a lever that allows you to remove the pin without using any tool.
If so, the next thing is to buy the Kit Quick Release para el Garmin Forerunner 935 which is usually around 30 euros
We will also need a piece of rubber or similar to make the Suunto watch fit better, applying pressure from below. I have used a piece of the material that is usually used to better insulate the windows when they do not close well. A bit of racquet grip tape or road bike handlebar tape might also do. Give it imagination!
I have cut two pieces of this tape and I have glued them (it has self-glue) in this position that you can see in the photo (just after the metal hooks). Although it could have been placed in the lower part and with more thickness. The idea is that you push the watch up so that it is more snug and does not move, since without this “cushion” the Suunto has a lot of play in the mount.
Once this is done, it is a matter of removing the Suunto strap and putting two 24mm pins on it that you will also have to buy or recover from another watch. I have asked for some quick adjustment pins such as those in this link (note, they are not the ones I show in the photos, because they have not yet arrived).
Then we can put the Suunto in the support and from there directly to the Garmin half turn support ????
I personally like much more how it looks using a Garmin compatible flip mount and the readings seem much easier to me.
To end
In the absence of Suunto coming up with something similar, for around 50 euros we can take our Suunto in a better position and in a more aerodynamic position than with the traditional rubber support.
Many kilometers to all!
