Donald Floyd Becker
Don, a lifetime resident of the Roseville and North Dumfries community, passed away peacefully at Brantford General Hospital on Sunday, March 5th, 2023, at the age of 92 years. Beloved husband to the late Alice Becker (nee Gay, 2017); loving father to Donald Jeffrey Becker, Janet Becker (Dean Smith), James Becker, and Jill Sarazin (Paul). Much loved grandfather to Joelle (Mike Dance), Drew and Nicole; Dylan, Connor and Avery; and Brady and Darcy; as well to his great-grandchildren Nolan and Alyssa. He will be sadly missed by his sister Geraldine Monnot of Ottawa as well as his extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Albert Floyd and Mary Belle Becker (nee McLeod), as well as an infant sister Shirley Elizabeth. He was born on Beckhaven Farm in Roseville. He studied at the University of Guelph and at Galt Business College. He returned to the farm where he worked tirelessly with his father Floyd and later his wife Alice and family. He was honoured with the Holstein Canada Master Breeder Award in 1980 for his registered herd, one of the highest producing herds in the region for many years. Don and family showed his dairy cattle in Waterloo County and at the Royal Winter Fair, earning recognition from both the community and the farming associations. After stepping away from the farm, Don attended local cattle shows and sales with friends and enjoyed dropping in on his neighbours to share in their love of farming. Don was a keen hockey and baseball enthusiast, eagerly following his Blue Jays and Maple Leafs and was always up to date with the players’ names and statistics. He was an early sponsor of the Ayr Centennials junior hockey club and an avid supporter of many other local teams. After retiring from the farm, Don took up golf in Lakeland, Florida and at Foxboro Green in Baden. While his enjoyment of golf started later in life, Don was committed to improving his game and impressively scored 5 holes-in-one. After moving back to Ayr, Don continued to golf with his favourite foursome at the Grand Valley Golf and Country Club, enjoying lunch every Wednesday with close friends and neighbours. A memorial celebration of Don’s life will take place on Saturday March 18th at Knox United Church, 92 Northumberland St. Ayr, and visitation from 10-11 am. Service at 11. Reception to follow. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be held at historic Roseville Mennonite Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Alisha and the Home and Community Care workers who supported Dad at his home the past few years. Warmest thanks to his friends Don Poth, Ron Montgomery, Don Eby and the exceptionally kind neighbours of Bute Street who checked in on Dad regularly over the past years to see how he was doing and assisted in driving him to appointments. He truly appreciated the friendship of his community and the opportunity to share his memories, visit with friends and talk about the latest game. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Township of North Dumfries NDCC Twin Pad Arena Project Memorial Fund.
